Kattia’s Kitchen may well rank as my second most favourite authentic Mexican experience when that craving hits. What this food truck offers is ice cream burritos, and if that’s not enough to whet one’s appetite for the summer, then I don’t know what will. The restaurant is located by Saanich Commonwealth Place, which is at the outskirts of Victoria proper, and I just may have to visit there more often!
That’s because I want to sample more of Kattia’s wares. At the diner are a lot more than the usual street food offerings–tacos, burritos and quesadillas–since they post on social media what their specials are, and in a proper kitchen, what’s offered allows them to advertise Tortas Ahogadas and offer more sweet, colourful treats! My mouth is already salivating.
I’m a sucker for sweet treats, and that’s what attracted me to this operation when at the Spot Prawn Festival with Don a few weeks ago. There won’t be a report this year, since there’s nothing really new to say. One detail I will note is that the market vendor side had a lot more of a Hispanic presence this year. At the event, I was already full after the main course and visiting Kattia’s food truck operation. I really wanted to have something at Los Panas Kitchen but to find them on their normal days of operation at Market Square has been a challenge lately. When the weather is right, they’ll be running their cart from Thursday to Sunday (from what I’m told), but when not, they take it easy. Also, with lots of events taking place lately, they’ve been all over town. Not even the local street food app can keep up. I can’t fault them for going where they can make the most money, but having regular hours is needed.
At least I can always go back to MAiiZ Nixtamal! They have grasshopper tacos on the menu, and that’s enough to get me leaping back for more! These scrumptious bugs had a beautiful smokey hot bite to them, and with the lemon dressing on top, not even the initial two I had proved enough. These will only be available for a limited time, so if you’re a local, let’s show the support that entomology is not dead. Prove to those adverse to ’em that this is the future if we don’t curve our ways and dependency for factory food.
If other operations like Kattia’s Kitchen can follow suit, I can have more choices around town. I feel more restaurants should at least have one offering for those feeling adventurous to take the challenge. They’re not as gross as people think.
