The Food Court in Aberdeen Centre is impressive for what it offers, but if one is focused on only Japanese food, there’s two other places to try too.
As I wandered about the food court, I found Mazazu Crepe. The company website claims healthy goodness, but I’m not sure. I did like the soft sponginess of the crepe they use, but what I ate didn’t really stand out. They look good in plastic, which I captured a picture of, but when I bit into the rolled up piñata, I thought it was weak.
I could hardly taste the crunch of their Banana Chocolate Almond crepe ($3.86). A lot of the flavour was packed at the bottom than all out, and even the bananas didn’t taste all that good. They weren’t ripe.
And the other place which I used to ga-ga over is starting to go goo-goo. When I first visited Beard Papa’s three years ago, they were only a couple of months old, and I took the advice of showing up early to get ’em while they’re hot.
Their custard was firmer back then and even after a few hours, heading home to Victoria, they stood the test of time. They were tongue-numbingly good.
Now a few years later, even after trying another outlet in Downtown Vancouver, their custard filling is far too soft. It wants to splash out on the first bite. Hand wipes are really needed here.
Now I really have to wonder about the quality. While I agree Beard Papa’s has a huge market because of the unique flavours they offer, like green tea or pina colada, their preparation process has gone downhill at nearly each of their franchised operations.
What headquarters needs to do is to exercise quality control.
