The Banker Defaults on Fish

Bard & Banker Pub
1022 Government St.
Victoria, B.C.
(250) 953-9993

J: When I step through the doors of the Bard & Banker, it’s hard not to feel like it’s Christmas.

Could it be the daily specials (drink must be bought to qualify)? No. Is it the grandiose look of the Bard that makes me appreciate this self-proclaimed “Scottish” pub? No, it’s not that either. I know, it must be that the Bard used to be the former location of the Spirit of Christmas.
With its lights, ornaments and decorated trees, Spirit of Christmas was one of the happiest places on Earth, next to Disneyland that is.

It’s Just Like Riding a Bicycle

The Penny Farthing
2228 Oak Bay Ave.
Oak Bay, B.C.
250-370-9008

E: Has it been a year already? With James limited schedule, sometimes we don’t often hit old haunts as often as we like. In Oak Bay, we wanted to revisit the Penny Farthing. And at the same time, met up with Mike Rowe of Forkjoy for a casual get-together.

Fairfield Fish and Chips

Fairfield Fish & Chips
1277 Fairfield Rd.
Fairfield
Victoria, B.C.
(250) 380-6880

J: I just can’t seem to stay away from Fairfield, no matter how I try. The quaintness of the houses and the slower pace of its residents (and we’re not speaking of its seniors) holds my attention.

To me, this area is idyllic. It’s close enough to downtown to enjoy the convenient shopping but it’s far enough away to enjoy a neighbourhood Sunday BBQ in peace. Perhaps in future I’ll rent a place here, for now, like a divorced man with no custody of his child, I’ll have to satisfy myself with the occasional visit.

A West Coast romp by the Sea, Fish n’ Chips in Jordan River and other points in Between.

Fish n’ Chips by the Sea
West Coast Road (Highway 14)
Jordan River, BC

Hungry hikers and Pacific Rimmers take note, a stop by Jordan River before entering the Juan de Fuca Park (or the many beaches that line the west coast of Vancouver Island), is worth making a stop for. Well, if anyone needs plenty of calories to burn before undertaking those hikes towards those many quiet (and popular) beaches, Fish n’ Chips by the Sea is a unique operation that, so I hear, runs rain or shine.

Going Back (in Time) with Gosworth

Gosworth Fish & Chips
3009 Gosworth Rd.
Victoria, BC
(250) 595 – 3474

J: It wasn’t long after leaving Crown Palace / Chicken on the Run that I truly astounded Ed. I wanted to eat again. I’ve had this urge for months to revisit Gosworth Fish & Chips, my old haunt. I remember the small little shop with the cafe tables and the bright white interior. On a sunny day, the whole room would be lit and you could see the kitchen as you waited for a meal. Many times I took my helping of cod and chips home in brown paper or newsprint.

E: For me, my memories were locked with Haultain Fish and Chips. Grandma fed me well.

Losing their Chinese Marbles

Marble Arch Fish & Chips
3468 Tllicum Rd.
Saanich, BC
(250) 386-7141

E: When considering the price of popcorn and pop at the movie theatre these days, trying to stave off a case of the munchies while watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two was difficult. James had an idea to check out a chinese diner… or is that a seafood place? I’m not sure what that restaurant was, but it was like I walked into magical mystery store.
