The Five Must See Movies of Oct 17 – 23, 2014

100YearOldIt seems that even when you manage to find ten movies of the month that you can’t wait to see, why is it that the one Canadian film I love has no photos, no trailers and no official website? Maybe it’s because I answered my own question: it is Canadian — meaning no US distributor has taken notice.

I speak of Minor League of Justice, a comedy about a group of minor superheroes trying to break into the big leagues. They just keep stumbling over their own incompetence. The film is probably inspired by last year’s comedy musical, Man of Steel Song — written by Melissa D’Agostino (who is also the writer and cast member of Minor League).

The 90-minute film stars Nicole Stamp (Dan for Mayor, The Next Step), Julian DeZotti (Suits, Orphan Black), Ian Fisher (Covert Affairs, Reign), and Marco Timpano (Nikita, Flashpoint).

According to Internet Movie database, it’s getting the big screen treatment November 15th. Hopefully I’ll see a trailer soon.

The Five Must See Movies of Oct 10th – 16th, 2014

TheJudgeOver this past week I have discovered that the places to see films in a local independent setting wasn’t just exclusive to the theatres whose films we list weekly.

Places like Blue Bridge Repertory in Victoria may show live theatre in their home at the old Roxy but they have been known to show films as well. At this time though, showing movies at the theatre has been suspended until Blue Bridge comes up with a more specialized movie schedule.

For now, opportunities to catch a film are plentiful. The Cowichan Theatre in the Cowichan Valley shows both films and live theatre in high-definition, the Community Hall on Pender Island hosts films from time to time, and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel shows films every Tuesday.

I’ve heard Mayne Island hosted movie nights at their community hall every week but as of this time it appears to have discontinued. If anyone knows if Mayne’s movie nights are ongoing, drop me a line and I will be glad to add them to our weekly listings.

E: When James and I were last in Oak Bay, I came across a Japanese diner that featured an article about a forgotten favourite place I liked to go dine in during the 90’s. Was I feeling nostalgia? Yes, because the owner/operator closed up shop on Yates Street and ever since then, I wished I could find a place that could serve the style of thick noodled ramen that I came here to enjoy. Apparently, in the article, it said that he came out of retirement to open up Mutsuki-An. This business is now family run, but as for where he is, or if any of those old flavours can still be found, the menu did not say. Newer flavours could be found … but it took a while for us to find this place. For some reason, I could’ve sworn that it was located off Foul Bay Road. After visiting a different diner, off we were, through Oak Bay than leaving it, to find this Japanese restaurant. I still blame James for giving me false directions since obviously he did not know his way around this municipality.

The Five Must See Movies of Sept 26th – Oct 2nd, 2014

TheBoxtrollsHello again and welcome back to my weekly article. As we approach the month of October there can only be one thing on people’s minds. No, it’s not Halloween and it’s not pumpkin pie, it is the upcoming movies. As we leave the hum drum that can sometimes be the September movie month, we arrive at the doorstep of October where animation and horror films can be found inside just by turning the doorknob.

Although there are plenty of films for the family in the month ahead, you may be surprised to learn that many of them do not make my “Must See” list. Out of the ten films from the top ten list to be published in an article on Otaku no Culture, here is a sneak peek at five of those movies:

The Five Must See Movies of Sept 12 – 18, 2014

Ghostbusters1For the month of September, Cinecenta has a treat for film lovers of both old and new. Movies such as Ghostbusters, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Obvious Child, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Taking My Parents To Burning Man, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show will delight all at the little theatre located on the University of Victoria campus.

Cinecenta will also be celebrating their 5th Latin America and Spanish film week Sept 16th to the 21st. Such films as 7 Boxes, The Amazing Catfish, The Delay, and A Gun in Each Hand are in this year’s line-up.

In Cinecenta’s Matinee for Kids, Earth To Echo will feature Saturday Sept 27th and Sunday 28th at 1pm. All seats are $4.75 each.

Coming soon to The Fritz will be Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight, Lucy, Boyhood and the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Sidney’s Star Cinema has tickets on sale for the 2014-15 season of The Metropolitan Opera. Tickets are $24 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $185 for a series pass.
