Food hopping in a July weekend

An old nursery rhyme comes to mind when James and I fanned out in search for some organic food goodness. The day was too nice to be indoors, so one piggy went to the market and the other one stayed home. Well, James hit a local farmer’s market near his home and I went to the Organic Islands Festival.

Yvonne joined us in this adventure and we found more than our wallets getting lighter by mid afternoon. With a hot sun beating down upon us, I felt more like one thirsty bloke.

Taking Another Bite Locally

From one food sampling event to another, James and I are planning on hitting Fernwood Bites. Well, that’s assuming there’s still tickets left. Like the ICC Fest, this one has an impressive list of vendors. Unlike it, this one’s exercising crowd control.

Tickets are $35, and they can be bought at Lucy’s in the Square, Fernwood Inn, Cornerstone Cafe and the Fernwood Community Centre.

In this inaugural event, there’ll be plenty to do, like live music to dance to and a silent auction to spend your money on. Not only will it expand our already growing waistlines but also contribute to a good cause. It’s a fundraiser for a much needed Fernwood Neighbourhood Chest Fund. It’s designed to help the community grow and use in times of need.

So shake your tail feather, and let’s support our local communities.

A New Urban Bite

E: The community of Fernwood is a really nice place to visit, and I really wish I lived here. I feel right at home, and just attending their inaugural foodie fest is just temptation in action. Especially with all the good restaurants located here. To name a few, there’s Lucy’s In the Square, the Cornerstone Cafe, Fernwood Inn and Stir it Up. And all of them didn’t disappoint at this event.

J: And don’t forget the wonderful Little Piggy, Ed. I definitely felt very comfortable among the crowd. I talked with people I didn’t know, bumped into those I did and enjoyed the very social atmosphere that was Fernwood Bites. I’ll be planning a return. Aubergine is just one of a a few businesses that really caught my attention. They’re also highly regarded too.

Defending our Backyard, Arr!

J: Let me just say, the Island Chefs’ Collaborative 3rd Annual Food Festival has shown me how many more great people I have yet to meet. It was a beautiful sight to see caterers, farmers, restaurateurs and chefs all working towards one goal.

That is the promotion of local food. What I observed today was a drop of water from a very large pond. I hope over time we can bring these people to your attention.

E: And stuff our faces!

Defending our Backyard was like storming the barn doors, and going to see what the higher class restaurants offer without having to go there. I wouldn’t say it’s cheaper, but it’s a way to sample what each place could do before deciding to boldly go where no hungry man has gone before.

Summertime Plaid

Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival
Topaz Park
Victoria, BC

It’s the weekend that Summer officially begins and I had a choice of geeking out at a Steampunk convention or heading to the 147th Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival. I’m glad I did the latter because I’m dying for an opportunity to try haggis. Sadly, there was none to be found but plenty to toss about.

I could’ve ran out to the field to catch one, but I’m sure I’d be recreating a moment from Braveheart with angry Scots chasing after me. With no James in sight to catch the ball, I’m just gonna get plummeled.

Yes, there was Scottish food to be found, but not of the variety that I hoped. I can certainly understand that it’s impossible to predict how many pieces are haggis are needed to feed a hungry mass of people, and rationing would be required. But this isn’t the Blitz.

But at least I didn’t come out disappointed. I made some inquiries and was told haggis can be bought locally in the Brentwood Bay area.
