I do take out sushi all the time at Fujiya’s at Shelbourne on those days where I’m in a rush. With a video editing project to finish for next day, I wondered where I could find that kind of equivalent here in Whistler, BC.

There was the choice of Fuji Market, a tiny Japanese grocery store with a restaurant operation at the edge of town or going back to Sushi Village. I tried Fuji, and they’re not perfect when I crave uniqueness. In the two times I wandered in, they didn’t have a huge selection ready for the masses. I found that their Futomaki roll without the Inari rolls (bean curd pockets) was edible but at four pieces for almost $5, this snack didn’t tide me over. Unlike Fujiya’s, there’s hardly any variety here.

After my experience the previous day, I returned to Sushi Village and asked for take-out. I ordered their box sushi for a little over $10, which consisted of pressed fish onto rice. Upon arriving back to my room, I cracked open the video editing suite Final Cut Pro and the plastic case my meal was placed in.

On one half of the bed of fish was a thinly sliced layer of orange, and the other half lemon. I received a variation of what’s written in the menu and I’m glad I got this extra treatment. The fruits sat long enough to give the fish that tender fruitiness that worked very well with the salmon, scallop, shrimp and tuna.

If I was to measure the rice content, I’d say there is the equivalent of two bowls in this boxed lunch. Normally, I consume only one bowl and that’s enough to fuel me for half the day. If it wasn’t for the fact I was computer-bound, I’d probably take the gondola up to the mountain, climb some hills and scream, “I’m on top of the world,” given the taste of heaven I found in this meal.

And yes, I’d get plenty of stares from the skiers and snowboarders, and then I’d try to run away from the avalanche I’d create. Not like that’d stop me at all. Now I just have to remember where I can find this meal back in Victoria. I know I saw it listed in a few menus. Now I just have to remember where….
