A Couple of Delicious Fundraisers

This one almost slipped my radar but thanks to Stephanie of Cupcakes & Sundry, I managed to home in on it. For those people who live in the greater Toronto area, this Sunday April 10th there were be multiple bake sales to help raise funds for the Japan earthquake victims. Some of the best bakers in the TO area will be selling off delicious goodies for only a fraction of the cost.

There is also live music and pieces of artwork will be auctioned off. Come out and show your support for those in need.

Stephanie of the Cupcakes and Sundry food blog will be selling her wares at the Liberty Noodle from 11am to 3 pm.

On Saturday, April 16th, the Langford Fire Hall #1 in Langford, British Columbia will be hosting a Book & Baked Goods Sale from 9am to 2pm. All proceeds go to support a family with one final wish.

Donations of monetary value or book sale items may be made by contacting Rebecca at 250-920-8433. Please only donate what would be sellable.

Special thanks for this fundraiser go to the Langford Fire & Rescue and the Langford Women’s Auxiliary.

Salty’s Service Makes Mealtime Mediocre

Salty’s Fish & Chips
738 Goldstream Ave.
Langford, BC
(250) 474-6662
When one mentions “chippy,” what pops to mind isn’t some chubby cherub dressed in school uniform with his own BBC sitcom. Fond memories of indie shops with cod and chips served over counter, wrapped in newsprint, are lovingly recalled. To me, it’s a slice of heaven and for a time, it was named Gosworth Fish & Chips. Finding oneself a nice shop with a friendly proprietor is gold — and one can only hope it’s there for generations to enjoy much like The Golden Fish Bar in Central London.

Salty’s is a chippy of some form, but it’s more of a seafood restaurant with decent interior. The business just pushes British as you walk in. A film poster of Norman Wisdom, autographed photos from Coronation Street and wall hangings of various British regions can give an air of familiarity to British born or raised. Salty’s even carries copies of the British Columbian for an ex-pat (or ex-pat at heart) to read while waiting for a meal.

I Don’t Want This Brand, I Want That Udder Guys

The Udder Guys provides a nice creamy treat with their wild blackberry flavoured ice cream. The great thing about this is that I can’t taste the fat like I can with other brands. Out of all of my experiences, only Chapman’s surpasses The Udder guys. With such a price for a small container (500 ml), I was rather worried I was receiving very little bang for my buck—but I was wrong, the ice cream is sweet but not sickeningly so. And it only takes a few scoops to satisfy ones appetite.

Real berries from Vancouver Island were used. I’m not only finding the seeds in my treat but I’m also seeing the blackberry juices in the cream.

Buying ice cream with blackberries in it is better than foraging. Think of the trouble and time I’d save from picking them. Think of the clothing I won’t have to wash. And look mum, no bloody fingers! The Udder Guys do the job for me. While they certainly won’t show-up to garnish my ice cream with blackberries, they will garnish my blackberries with ice cream.

Purchased from Western Foods (Langford).

2010: Let’s Do The Time Warp!

It’s just a jump to the left or was it a step to the right. I’m definitely sure you have to put your hands on your hips and turn your knees in tight. But if a drag act is what one wants from this article one may have to watch the Rocky Horror film or a stage show with Danny La Rue (posthumously). This article is just a recollection of food I ate and weight I gained over the past year. If you don’t see a business listed here, it is most likely I was not able to dine there in 2010. And Here for the reader’s pleasure (or disgust) are my 2010 favourites.

The Road To Greece

Mad Greek’s Pizza
703 Goldstream Avenue
Langford, BC
(250) 478-6112

Making one’s way home in a wind storm with lightning zipping over my head wasn’t one of my better ideas. A cab could’ve easily carry me to mi casa without any threat of becoming lost in the dark or crisped by a well placed bolt. But I am sure Ed would weep at my funeral and recite, “In life, he was a great friend but in death he was a great entrée.”

But the fickle finger of fate wasn’t going to touch me this night. Instead I made my way in the darkness without lamp nor stars until, from a distance, I saw a beacon of magnificent blue. A Mad Greek’s Pizza sign perched high above to attract weary travelers like myself and possibly drunks at 2 AM.

I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles in my Tea

Culis Market
#153 – 2745 Veterans
Memorial Parkway
Langford, BC

(250) 478-8831

I had my first taste of Bubble Tea ($3.75 plus tax) today courtesy of Culis Market. When stores, restaurants and cafes started carrying the Thai drink, I didn’t buy into it. When Chek 6 News did a segment years ago about the popularity of Bubble Tea, I wasn’t moved to tears.
