Confessing for Good Ice Cream in Vancouver

True Confections

Vancouver, BC

No one can resist cake, not even me. Well, in the case of how to end my day trip in Vancouver, I chose pie over cake. Is that bad?

True Confections is a restaurant that only serves desserts. My buddy Carson and his pals took me to this shop to help round out my trip. Upon arrival, I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the place before being enamored by all the cake offerings on display.

But this place does more than just cake. There’s cheesecake, tarts and ice cream too! Well, it seems they do not serve ice cream alone, but if they did—and started making sodas and shakes too—I think it’s time to move to Vancouver!

Eatin’ up the Food and Arts scene in Vancouver

I spent yesterday at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s “The Colour of My Dreams” Surrealist art exhibit as my way to celebrate another year in transition. After the show, I was thinking of hitting a nearby restaurant, but time was tight and I should’ve made my way home. By chance, I happened to be at the Vancouver Farmers Market that was set up at Thornton Park, next to the Main St. Skytrain Station. This event runs at different locations throughout the year, and in this case, I was in the right place at the right time. This particular market runs from June 1st to October 5th.

Going Green for Ice Cream

Call me spoiled, or call me Asian, but I certainly love my green tea. Depending on the plant used, the flavour can be exotically smooth or gently earthy. To infuse it as a flavour to go along with ice cream is tricky, and I can’t always visit a restaurant to sate my craving. Some establishments manufactures them in house but others will just buy a stock brand and dole them out for customers to enjoy.

In the few specialty ice-cream establishments I went to in town, the Marble Slab Creamery scores on the very good scale in making a smooth, buttery, green tea combination that I’d consider great, but also very sweet.

E: I’d have to say no trip to Salt Spring Island on a warm summer day will ever be complete without a trip to Harlan’s Chocolates & Gelato.

This place can give Willy Wonka a run for his money, but instead of a gold certificate, it’s a munch card. And after 10 purchases, you get a prize.

J: Yes, there was a small line-up between me and my golden ticket (gelato) but it only made my picking of one among many interesting flavours more rewarding.

Moo Over, There’s an Ice Cream Parlour in Town

The next series of articles will be about my dining adventures in Whistler, BC mid April. They could’ve been posted sooner, but I was up there on a working vacation with very little time to enjoy myself. I was a member of Parker Productions and we had 72 hours to make a short film to submit to the Telus World’s Ski and Snowboard Festival. And immediately after that weekend of fun, I had to prepare for final exams.

I Don’t Want This Brand, I Want That Udder Guys

The Udder Guys provides a nice creamy treat with their wild blackberry flavoured ice cream. The great thing about this is that I can’t taste the fat like I can with other brands. Out of all of my experiences, only Chapman’s surpasses The Udder guys. With such a price for a small container (500 ml), I was rather worried I was receiving very little bang for my buck—but I was wrong, the ice cream is sweet but not sickeningly so. And it only takes a few scoops to satisfy ones appetite.

Real berries from Vancouver Island were used. I’m not only finding the seeds in my treat but I’m also seeing the blackberry juices in the cream.

Buying ice cream with blackberries in it is better than foraging. Think of the trouble and time I’d save from picking them. Think of the clothing I won’t have to wash. And look mum, no bloody fingers! The Udder Guys do the job for me. While they certainly won’t show-up to garnish my ice cream with blackberries, they will garnish my blackberries with ice cream.
