Shopping and Dining over at Mattick’s Farm

A visit to the area known as Mattick’s Farm can only mean one of four things — you’re there to golf at the nearby Cordova Bay Golf Course, eat at Adrienne’s Restaurant and Tea Garden, shop in one of the many boutiques in the strip mall or buy food at Red Barn Market. I was there for half of a briskly cold day to warm the cockles of my stomach. I’ve heard Red Barn has some of the best and thickest sliced bacon on the island (from Metchosin Farm in what I found) and that I must test and have a snack at the diner. It’s small cozy atmosphere was just right on a busy day. The smell of Christmas was in the air at the nearby shops and although it’s not a place I’d get sundries from, I’m sure what’s offered is as great as stocking stuffers and tokens to visitors who are not from Victoria.

The Addams Family is Morbidly Candid Fun! A Review

No matter what the generation, the Addams Family has entertained many a reader or viewers in the form of its original one panel comic illustrations, television show, cartoon and movies. It’s latest incarnation includes a musical which toured before Victoria, BC’s Kaleidoscope Theatre decided to put on their own version for the 2014 Halloween season. This company teaches youths how to overcome some of life’s challenges — one of which includes finding each individual’s spark of life — and become stronger for it; as a result, The Addams Family Musical is a spectacular choice because its plot reveals how to deal with barriers, no matter where it comes from.

It’s morbidly candid humour was at the crux of what made this series popular and it outdoes The Munsters on a certain level where one product provided a bit of social commentary whereas the other was flat-out sitcom.

The Road to Cadboro Bay – A Food Review

E: When James and I were last in Oak Bay, I came across a Japanese diner that featured an article about a forgotten favourite place I liked to go dine in during the 90’s. Was I feeling nostalgia? Yes, because the owner/operator closed up shop on Yates Street and ever since then, I wished I could find a place that could serve the style of thick noodled ramen that I came here to enjoy. Apparently, in the article, it said that he came out of retirement to open up Mutsuki-An. This business is now family run, but as for where he is, or if any of those old flavours can still be found, the menu did not say. Newer flavours could be found … but it took a while for us to find this place. For some reason, I could’ve sworn that it was located off Foul Bay Road. After visiting a different diner, off we were, through Oak Bay than leaving it, to find this Japanese restaurant. I still blame James for giving me false directions since obviously he did not know his way around this municipality.

Kim’s Vietnamese is a Guilty Pleasure

E: If ever you are in the mood for the food of Vietnam, then you should try your taste buds on Kim’s on Johnson. I know I’m starting off this article by sounding like a commercial but how else am I going to get you to try the atmosphere this place offers. It’s low lighting and warm comfortable decor is perfect for anyone having a romantic dinner or in some people’s cases a bromantic one.

J: I knew the owner’s sons at good ol’ George Jay Elementary. Okay, it was no Blanshard but they had one hell of a library. To get to my point, I wasn’t going to let any sort of association get in my way of a restaurant review.

The Five Must See Movies of Oct 3rd – 9th, 2014

TwoFacesOfJanuaryCinecenta’s list of films is looking mighty tasty for the month of October. In a tribute to the late Robin Williams, the films of Jumanji starring David Alan Grier and Mrs. Doubtfire with Pierce Brosnan will be featured this month.

Other films on Cinecenta’s list are Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange starring Alfred Molina and John Lithgow about Two New Yorkers who are married after gay marriage is made legal in the state. But both of them learn that small steps for gay rights doesn’t wipe away the discrimination that still exists in a modern society.

Newer films on show will be Woody Allen’s Magic In the Moonlight, Disney’s Planes: Fire and Rescue, Begin Again with Mark Ruffalo and Kiera Knightley, Calvary starring Brendan Gleeson, and The Trip to Italy with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.

It’s available today only (while supplies last) at The Pig BBQ Joint and comes with a free early-bird pass (starting at 8am) to Cherry Bomb Toy’s Ultimate Hobby & Toy Fair that’s happening October 5th at the Pearkes Recreation Center.

I flew immediately into town to try this new idea out, and if I had a jetpack, I’d be arriving in my Rocketeer get up. However, that costume is still in the works as I need to find the right aviator jacket before I can make a helmet and flight pack. Instead, I arrived in my all-weather jacket with the Apollo 11 and Tesla patch to show I was in the mood to try this meal.
