J: I just can’t seem to stay away from Fairfield, no matter how I try. The quaintness of the houses and the slower pace of its residents (and we’re not speaking of its seniors) holds my attention.

To me, this area is idyllic. It’s close enough to downtown to enjoy the convenient shopping but it’s far enough away to enjoy a neighbourhood Sunday BBQ in peace. Perhaps in future I’ll rent a place here, for now, like a divorced man with no custody of his child, I’ll have to satisfy myself with the occasional visit.

Bubble Tea on the Run

Bubble Tea on the Run

J: Sunday should be a lazy day, a time for relaxation and reflection, for watching what garbage they put on TV before changing my mind and renting a movie from Two Thumbs Up. But none of this occurred because I bused it to downtown Victoria for the International Chalk Festival (and any excuse to eat at another restaurant).

There and Back Again with Dutch Bakery

The Dutch Bakery

E: The Dutch Bakery is a good standby when James is late and needs a bite to eat. I was busy but by the time I finally met him an hour later, did I chew him out? Nope. A Flying Dutchman got in the way.

J: I was late with a good reason. Ed and I have a 2nd meeting place at Murchie’s where I knew he could be found in the company of freelance journalist Tim Colinson (he has many articles published in Monday Magazine).

J: Even with the sun shining and the day looking as beautiful as it did, it was still a tough one for me. I took communion and gave special prayer at Christ Church Cathedral. My thoughts were on my co-worker who is suffering from Stage 4 leukemia. To say I didn’t shed a few tears would be a complete and utter lie. Thankfully Ed was there to help take my mind off of the bad things in life.

Our scheduled lunch at Sockeye Sushi fell through and it was then that I learned that Urbanspoon can’t be right all the time.

Fentimans Cherry Tree Grows Tall

Fentimans
Cherry Tree Cola

Available at: The Root Cellar

Ed — What can be found in a champagne fountain but a round of bubbly? I’d have to say Fentimans Cherry Tree Cola does. It can flow like a round of sparkly wine to be enjoyed during a social event, if I had my choice. The drink offers more than just a simple excitement in my mouth: it’s a gingerly kiss of additional flavours that puts other cherry sodas to shame.

Quite simply, there is a hint of fermented ginger which helps enhance the other tastes. I discovered this drink at The Root Cellar. A day later, I’m sipping this lightly alcoholic drink and enjoying every drop.

Opening a new wave of hot (dogs) at Victoria Oven

J: On a warm Victoria day, I was following Ed on an empty stomach as he attempted to complete his errands, from the metaphysical crystals at Instinct Art & Gifts to the artistic supplies of Island Blue. But now and again I would redirect when something of interest popped into the corner of my eye.
