Intrepid Theatre Victoria Updates

Nobody is certain if the world will be back on track Summer 2021. This includes upcoming Canada Day celebrations.

In Victoria, BC, not a lot of festivals are confirmed to take place and for those Fringe theatre enthusiasts, no official word is announced. It’s certainly safe to say online (virtual) style events will be offered where available, and for Intrepid Theatre’s end of summer tradition is unconfirmed at time of writing. However, it’s not to say they aren’t hosting other events.

This free online show will be available June 20 – 26 and it’ll spotlight social justice through the performing arts. Red on Red is looking like it’ll be available to view for anyone to see world-wide.

ES: L’Authentique Poutine and Burgers have new digs! Instead of operating out of Langford during the cold winter months (although it’ll soon be Spring), they have a new space down by the wharf to serve up their tasty French fries and burgers for city residents! They’re well known for their fancy poutines and while I don’t expect them to vary the flavours regularly, I will be back to have their french fries time and time again.

DK: Points for longevity. The minor setback of a fire licking the Langford truck into submission back in 2012 doesn’t seem to have had a long-term effect on L’Authentique’s success. Nearly a decade later and here they are in a prime downtown location. But is it worth lining up 30m-1hour once tourists are back in town?

Not if you stick to the published menu. The bacon cheeseburger is reminiscent of an A&W Teen Burger, and the cheese curds in the poutine are squeaky as expected. Don’t get me wrong, it makes for a satisfying enough meal, but I wouldn’t brave tourist crowds for it.

Ageless Gardens Continues to Grow! Now Into Season Three

Ageless Gardens is demonstrating that not even this show can end. Season 3 is set to premiere on VisionTV Monday, February 15 at 9pm ET.

This latest chapter expands upon the original series vision, focusing on the ‘ageless’ aspect of gardening. This season features five new 30-minute episodes that each tell the story of the health and wellness benefits of gardening at any age. The episode to keep an eye out for is “Sacred Spaces,” which explores not only what this activity can do for the soul, but also to “ground” yourself during these times. Not everyone knows how to manage stress well, and it’s just about connecting with the divine.

While British Columbia is beset with a last minute winter sneeze, this season is hardly that. It was partially filmed during the pandemic and with heavy safety protocols in place, was able to finish production to show no virus can halt what hearty Victorians can do in any time of the year–illness or not.

Today, Prepare to get SPARKed at The Belfry’s online Theatre Festival

Tickets for Uncovered – Notes from the Heart are $25 (plus fee) available to purchase online.

The remainder of the Spark performances are free and their links can be accessed via belfry.bc.ca

The Belfry’s annual Spark Festival is online today, and it opens with Uncovered – Notes from the Heart, a livestream concert from Musical Stage Company. It will continue through to January 23 with an eclectic line up featuring a short film (June Yeo), a hybrid dance/theatre performance (Andrew Barrett), new plays in progress (Jo Leslie, Rick Waines) and a new realization of Summer Bucket List (Collectivus Theatre). These shows take place online, starting at 7:30pm PST.

Belfry’s Crush Fine Wine Auction Goes Online on Nov 30 to Dec 6

Job Posting – Manager, Community & Artistic ConnectionsStaff, volunteers and board members from Victoria ’s Belfry Theatre have been raiding some of this city’s best wine cellars to find rare and unusual wines to auction online for Crush 2020 presented by Odlum Brown Limited, the theatre’s premiere wine fundraiser.

This year’s lots will feature wine from France, Italy, California, British Columbia, Uruguay and two rare offerings of scotch whisky from Scotland.

Many of the bottles on offer are not available in liquor stores. Crush is the only opportunity to buy these bottles of wine – they have been held in private cellars, purchased abroad or were released in very small batches and subsequently sold out.

Rose Tints My World at the Vicious Poodle

On a quiet day, nobody would immediately know the Vicious Poodle pub is one of the new centres where LGBTQ can find terrific eats and enjoy an evening burlesque or drag show. One look at the menu, the focus is obvious. Also, the decor tells all. After my visit to nerd row, I was hungry and didn’t want to hit any of my regular food spots.

Any dining operation can struggle to stay afloat during a pandemic. Not every patron is willing to “come out” to support their favourite diner, especially with all the stay safe for your health restrictions in place. When owner/operator Socrates Diamant worked on converting the Sockeye Sushi Japanese diner (it had a lot of box seating) space and made it open spaced and inviting, my heterosexuality was not challenged. Instead, I saw my quest for perfect French fries ongoing. After the first bite, I was ready to sing ou la la and do the can-can.
