Just what kind of dreams may come from this year’s Victoria Fringe Festival? That’s just one of many themes I’ve noticed when flipping through the pages of the guide. When my passion in theatre is for the fantastic, that’s going to become the guiding force for some of the shows I plan on going to see. This year marks the 29th annual show, and I feel this year will be a hint of great things to come when the 30th rolls around next year. Okay, I’m thinking a year ahead, but I’m sure there’s some folks from Intrepid who’s already planning well in advance in how to make next year a big celebration. For this year’s fun, there’s a grand mix of style, and just what I’m looking for is varied.

Herein lies my picks for the 2015 year.

The Geeks of Victoria will most likely be mourning a loss of a gaming convention. It did an admirable job of hanging on for more than five years. When compared to other nerdy conventions that ran in this city (toy shows don’t count), that’s twice the power but thrice the bad luck since it’s move from the Pearkes Recreation Centre. In a statement issued Monday evening, Gottacon Conventions will no longer be continuing. They cite financial losses and the lack of internal support to keep on going.

Hopefully other shows can help carry on the torch, as this city needs more geeks with power to keep nerdom alive.

I’m On Board with A Street Car Named New Orleans! But I must leave?

streetcarlogoThis ragin’ cajun is hungry. Whether it be with a po’ boy or with gumbo, I still recall my first exposure to the culinary delights from Louisiana began in Calgary, Alberta. Just what does beef country have to do with down south? well, this good ol’ boy went for the slow roasted New Orleans style sandwich at A Street Car Named New Orleans. To have more eateries featuring the tastes of this southern state is certainly getting my seal of approval!

The slow cooked beef that they prepare is certainly mouth waveringly good. The smoky scents blew me away, and I was lucky to be the first in line to get my lunch before the crowds really came bustling in. The amount offered in one sandwich certainly shows that this operations gives one great value for a ten-dollar bill!

One nitpick I have is with the quality of the tomatoes. Now in a dish like this, not a lot of folks will notice the veggies that’s included. I do, because tomatoes tend to complement beef very well when it’s truly fresh and salted to bring out the tanginess. I could taste the pickle (nothing special) and cheese, but the poor vegetable was drowned out.

[Comox Valley, BC] Fresh Fest is First to Delight Seafood Lovers!

The Comox Valley is going to offer more than just a li’ bit country fun as BC’s Shellfish & Seafood Festival enters its 9th year. Fresh Fest is going to kick off this 10 day event with its own special night that will take place at the Comox Marina Park on Friday, June 12th, from 4-9pm, and all proceeds are going to be donated to the North Island College Culinary Program.

This special dinner will be cooked by chefs Andrew Stigant (Russell Food Equipment) and Hamid Salimian (Captain of Culinary Team Canada for the World Culinary Olympics). They will be assisted by talents from Local Restaurants, Custom Gourmet, Eatmore Sprouts, Prontissima Pasta, Captain and the Chef Marine Services, As you Like it Products and Catering, and West Coast Mobile Kitchen.

Feast Your Eyes on “The Dream,” A Culinary Movie Review

El Somni (The Dream) is one of those films that is more of a visual exposition than a by-the-book style documentary about brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca. After taking home the first place award in the 50 Best Restaurants in the World ceremony of 2013, just what can they do next is explored in this film. These siblings desire to create a new artistic culinary movement to engage the five senses — if not six to create a spiritual awakening — of a dinner can make or break their established careers. They’re reknowned chefs from El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain.

Where Have All the Prawn Fun Gone?

I miss the Island Chefs’ collaborative’s version of the Spot Prawn Festival. That was truly an event to remember, and as far as I know, there was only one. The Victoria Public Market has since taken over with their own mini-festival. While not as large or elaborate, and really lacking fanfare, at least for those Victorians unable to leave the confines of this city to Cowichan Bay proper for all their independent shows (at brew pubs to eateries), what’s offered is good.
