Vancouver: Japadog

Japadog
Burrard St. & W. Georgia St.
Vancouver, BC

I can finally say I’ve tasted the best of what two cities can offer for Japanese fusion hot dogs.

Last year, I was in Seattle and found Gourmet Dog Japon a few blocks away from my hotel. In Vancouver, Japadog has a truck right across the street from where I’m staying. While I missed an opportunity on my first night here for Salvadoran food, I still have two days left … if I can tear myself away from Fan Expo.

L’Authentique Poutine & Burger Reawakens!

L’Authentique Poutine
& Burger

Langford, BC

Can this fact be true? Is “Zut alors” a cuss word? Well, that’s beside the point, but an exclamation must be used to let folks know that L’Authentique Poutine & Burger is back! And the best part of all is that their new truck is sporting the colours of the Quebec flag. One just has to excuse the wood panelling that’s added to the design too.

Although this food truck operation took longer to get going again, and I can certainly understand the Winter break. Although the Inuit do consume fatty meats to help them stay warm, the Victorians (let alone the folks in the Western Communities) do not need to.

Dishing out Food Justice, Mexi-Style!

1580 Cook St
Victoria, B.C.
(836) 737-2623
Fall/Winter hours:
Tues to Sat 11:30am to 4pm

¡Ay, caramba! Fusion cuisine is nearly all the rage these days, and at Taco Justice League (TJL), they’re reinventing the tortilla in a food truck. This place serves soft tacos with a variety of fillings. From deep-fried tempura avocados to brined pulled pork, each food offering sounds delicious.

This operation is a block away from ‘The Pandora Strip.’ It’s located right between Wellburns Market and the art gallery. I’d make the trek to the fringes of town just for another burrito, or maybe a taco, especially when the Fringe Festival kicks up.

L’Authentique Poutine’s Second Life!

L’Authentique Poutine and Burger
Langford, B.C.

Just how much poutine can one bloke have? Fortunately, when the portions are decently sized, plenty!

As some readers may know, I love a good french fry. And very rarely will I venture into James’ territory, Langford, to test the places that he has no time to hit. That includes a food cart operation that touts some good ol’ fashioned poutine. While most of their food is touted to be made with the heart and soul of a native Quebecois, well, is that just fancy copy writing or is that true?

Getting very Fresh with Local delights, Wild eh?

Fresh Local Wild
Burrard St & W Hastings St
Vancouver, BC

J: The Two Hungry Blokes were in Vancouver for a concert but with Ed’s mindset, we were staying for the food. I just wanted to get to the Georgian Court Hotel for a little nap but Ed planned a detour.

With a hop off the Skytrain, we disappeared into the Waterfront district and reappeared in front of a converted trailer where their title alone was too boastful to readily accept.

E: After seeing a segment on this street cart operation on Food Network’sDiners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” I was hooked, lined and sinkered. I knew the next time I was visiting the Mainland, I have to go here above all else and try the chowder poutine.

What this operation has going for them is the perfect french fry. Although slightly over crisped, that’s how I like them. And the soft juicy clam morsels and the nector of the broth (salmon and cod were used) helped soften the crunchiness. The tender meats helped make a beautiful texture that I really enjoyed.

A West Coast romp by the Sea, Fish n’ Chips in Jordan River and other points in Between.

Fish n’ Chips by the Sea
West Coast Road (Highway 14)
Jordan River, BC

Hungry hikers and Pacific Rimmers take note, a stop by Jordan River before entering the Juan de Fuca Park (or the many beaches that line the west coast of Vancouver Island), is worth making a stop for. Well, if anyone needs plenty of calories to burn before undertaking those hikes towards those many quiet (and popular) beaches, Fish n’ Chips by the Sea is a unique operation that, so I hear, runs rain or shine.
