Brickyard Pizza Doesn’t Always Slice

E: One free movie and pizza night sounds like a good deal to me. I had a pass to an advanced screening of The World’s End and James had one for The Brickyard. And for once, that was a plan worth putting together. Who doesn’t want to have an all expense paid free night in downtown Victoria?

J: I won these coupons at one of Brickyard’s few Cosplay parties. I’ve heard differing opinions about Brickyard but a lot of it was positive and those that were in the negative were not horror stories. Brickyard seems to me to be a good choice for a bite before we attend The World’s End (I always wanted to say that). I was craving Hawaiian but silly me left the decision to Ed like it was his birthday.

Not all of Thrifty Foods’ Sushi Measures up

The quality of the take-out sushi at Thrifty Foods is going to vary store-by-store. After two epic fails at the Shelbourne and McKenzie branch, I finally explored my options at the Hillside location. While I’m rarely out in Royal Oak, I do get tempted, and as for James Bay, they don’t even try.

The Tuscany Village location is slowly slipping off my radar in terms of quick bites. They still do a very mean fire oven roasted pizza when its fresh out of the fire, but with sushi, there are two other locales to sate my craving: Fujiya is about 1km down the road and the other Thrifty’s (at Hillside Mall) an extra 1.5km further.

Eventually I knew I’d be eating on the cheap. When looking for a quick bite in Whistler, a pizza by the slice averages $3.50. For lunch, I did a walkabout, looking for as many pizza outlets that I could find. There are plenty of places listed in their dining guide, but to reach them all would take a few hours.

Victoria’s Best Pizza my Foot!

There won’t be many times where a contest has raised my ire. Jack FM 103.1 has one that’s calling upon their listeners to rate the city’s best pizza as selected by them.

The slices that are in the running are Domino’s Philly Cheese Steak, Pizza Zone’s 420, Oregano’s Pizza & Bistro’s JJ’s Special, Pizza Hut’s The Stuffed Crust, and Palagio’s Pesto Chicken.

I see a huge problem here: why is this radio station including two major corporate players in the list for listeners to choose from? And in what I have to say, I’m most likely opening up a can of worms.

With names like Pizza Hut (to which I’ve had terrible experiences with, including home delivery) or Domino’s (which I never found flavorable), I’d rather eat gummies instead. At least the other places have their own following for the western style kind of pizza.

A Little Taste of Italy

J: With our bellies empty and wallets full, Ed and I donned our tights and made the mad dash to Pizzeria Prima Strada. What was once a garage is now home to brick oven baked pizzas. It seems only fitting that the place which once tuned-up cars now services people.

And that’s a good thing because we were both in need of more than a regular service. With the amount of greasy pizzas both of us had consumed in the past, Ed’s rear end shocks needed replacing and I felt like a beat up 58′ Ford Edsel.
