A Ghūl’s All Hallows Eve Guide to Frights & Entertainment in Victoria & the Gulf Islands

22271_1331667404240_2567935_nThe Dead of October is here. As a paranormal and archaeology enthusiast, there’s plenty for me to do at this time of year. But trick o’ treaters and lovers of horror films can find plenty of chills, thrills and frights to choose from. When a certain craving hits, thankfully this time of year is not always about the private parties or candy. Instead, it’s about what can transpire when Hunter’s Moon arrives.

The list of activities is nicely varied and there’s plenty to choose from for the young and old to partake in. Yes, even some nerdish delights can be found in this update, but who wants to be stuck indoors? The excitement is all in what can be found outdoors or in the fringe! But for residents of the Gulf Islands, just how they want to get the inner ghoul on means deciding in what is more interesting to attend. Presented here is a guide for what’s coming up:

The Must See Art Events of October, 2014

rez-sisters-1024-x-544-925x491There is so much to love in the arts and that is not limited to what occurs in the capital city of Victoria. Many communities exist up and down Vancouver Island and for the enthusiast, a road trip can be taken to see them all before hopping a ferry to see what has spilled over, onto little islands such as Mayne and Salt Spring. Although we lack a decent amount of professional companies we have more than enough amateur societies to take up the slack.

I have nothing but fond memories for the theatre. I experienced it working backstage and out front a long time ago. I fondly remember companies like Bastion Theatre, Claymar Productions, Kidco Theatre Dance, and Opera Box. They’re now names who are a part of our theatrical history.

In my youth, theatre production companies like Colin Skinner’s Capital Comedy Theatre were the rock gods of stage, The Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s HMS Pinafore was the first live theatre I experienced and actors like Peter Mannering, Colin Skinner, and Claude Watt were those who I was both inspired by and looked-up to.

But further articles won’t be so much about the past as it will about the future. There’s so much to see and do among the Gulf Islands, you only need to look in the right places. Over the months we hope to reveal those places to you.

J: Ed and I have nasty habits, we’re what you would call outdoorsy people, not the type you would think of. None of that camping in the rough with nothing but a tent and a sleeping bag for us. That may be all well and good for some people but Ed and I have cravings for a little social scenery. As Alicia Bridges sang, “I Love the Nightlife”, it very much applies to at least one of the Blokes. And for this week, our night life was an evening among animals who could eat more than us. Yes, it is possible. I’m talking about dinosaurs in the BBC travelling show Walking with Dinosaurs. As good as the show was, I was eager to spend my money on dino merchandise (I bought a Raptor mug) than on overly priced food at the Save on Foods Memorial Centre. So like hungry raptors we wandered the streets of Victoria looking for our next meals. It was very grim, restaurants were either closed or their kitchens were. Victoria is still a sleepy city most of the time even during tourist season.

The Five Must See Movies of Sept 26th – Oct 2nd, 2014

TheBoxtrollsHello again and welcome back to my weekly article. As we approach the month of October there can only be one thing on people’s minds. No, it’s not Halloween and it’s not pumpkin pie, it is the upcoming movies. As we leave the hum drum that can sometimes be the September movie month, we arrive at the doorstep of October where animation and horror films can be found inside just by turning the doorknob.

Although there are plenty of films for the family in the month ahead, you may be surprised to learn that many of them do not make my “Must See” list. Out of the ten films from the top ten list to be published in an article on Otaku no Culture, here is a sneak peek at five of those movies:
